NOTES FROM THE NEW WORLD and SHADES OF DAY - DIRECTORS CUT to be featured in september festival in Toronto

Los Angeles - VM Productions proud to announce that two of the films from their Dostoyevsky - LA Project, Shades of Day - Director’s Cut-2013 and Notes from the New World, will be featured at the 3rd Toronto World International Film Festival in Toronto September 23-29, 2016. Both films are part of the production company’s ambitious Dostoyevsky - LA Project, and will have their US Premieres later this year in New York and Los Angeles. Anyone interested in learning more about these and other VMP Films can sign up for the company’s email newsletter online at www.dostoevsky-bts.com/landing.html.

Shades of Day is a suspenseful Hollywood fable based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's classic novella White Nights (considered one of the greatest love stories ever written), but here transported to modern-day Los Angeles. The film was shot on super 16 separately in black and white and color, so the negative remained uncut until April 2013. On April 19th of this year, the rough cut of Shades of Day - Director's Cut-2013 had its world premiere at the 15th International Festival of Detective Films in Moscow, Russia (www.detectivefest.ru), where it won a special juried prize. The film has been screened at multiple festivals, including the Delhi International Film Festival in 2013 and the Festival of Festivals in St Petersburg in 2014. In May 2016 it has been privately screened for the Jury of Los Angeles Neo Noir Novel, Film & Script Festival (www.lanneff.com) and received the Gold Award. The film stars Camilla Bergstrom and Phillipe Bergeron, and was written, directed and Produced by VMP President Vitaly Sumin.

Notes from the New World is a contemporary retelling of Dostoyevsky's Notes from the Underground. The story unfolds in Los Angeles where dreams and harsh realities collide, a place where almost everyone spies on everyone else, and everyone seems to be playing a dangerous game. The film was also written, directed and produced by Sumin, who posits that it is both an adaptation and a continuation of Dostoyevsky’s work, as well as a re-telling of one of Dostoyevsky’s classics. The film stars Rebecca Sigl, Natasha Blasick, and Nathanael Theisen, and was written, directed and produced by Mr. Sumin.

Mr. Sumin (M.S. in Oceanography) started his career making documentary films related to Oceanography, which he studied before becoming a film maker. But he loved the filmmaking aspect of the work so much that he decided to abandon his scientific career and pursue a BA in film directing. After a brief stint as a game developer he attended the Sorbonne in Paris under a study grant. His script "The Idiot", which recast Fyodor Dostoevsky novel as a contemporary international thriller, received a development grant from The Warner Bros Fund. Later Sumin moved to Los Angeles, California, and created VM Productions to develop and produce quality films based on original stories and masterpieces of world literature.
