While shooting in the Hollywood\/L.A area \u00a0is an obviously smart business move, you may run into problems where your movies may be seen as something by-Hollywood-for-Hollywood that celebrates the industry. <em>(An industry historically built on under-representation and both thematic and screen \u201cwhite-washing\u201d)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dostoevsky-bts.com\/rewards_for_support.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dostoyevsky-L.A Project<\/a><\/strong>: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadesofday.com\">Shades of Day<\/a><\/strong> (2013), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmpfilms.com\/Notes_from_the_new_world.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Notes from the New World<\/strong><\/a> (2011),\u00a0<\/em>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadesofday.com\/VMP\/new-projects.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Crime and Punishment, LA<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (upcoming) all take place\u00a0within Los Angeles, \u00a0portraying a unique story, amongst the familiar background scenery of\u00a0greater Los Angeles. Similar to our films at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmpfilms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">VM Productions<\/a>, each of these movies touch upon familiar themes of excess,greed,glitz, and glamour; creating a truly unique experience and visual representation for the greater L.A area.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Double Indemnity (1944)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/M\/MV5BZmM2ZDU5NTMtNzBjMi00ZmU2LTg3MjEtODJkZjQ1YzE0ZTc5XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzc5NjM0NA@@._V1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1026\" height=\"746\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Directed by Billy Wilder and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, this hallmark of film noir explored the love affair between an insurance agent (Fred MacMurray), and the wife of a client (Barbara Stanwyck), whoplots to kill her husband for the insurance claim.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Sunset Boulevard (1950)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/M\/MV5BMTkyMTcwMDE4NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNjYyODM2._V1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"958\" height=\"718\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another great film-noir piece by Billy Wilder, In Sunset Blvd, a screenwriter (William Holden), develops a dangerous relationship with an aging silent movie star, caught up in the glitz and glamour of her former Hollywood life. (Gloria Swanson).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0Network (1976)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/M\/MV5BMTMzMjQxNjMwOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDE5NjMyNA@@._V1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1084\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Paddy Chayefsky, <em>Network,<\/em> follows the story of an overworked and disillusioned News Anchor (William Holden) and an ambitious young network executive (Faye Dunaway), during the height of Network television, ratings, and the turbulent 1970\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0Mulholland Drive (2001)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/M\/MV5BMTIzNDU1OTU3MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNTAzOTc2._V1_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1084\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Written and directed by David Lynch, this cerebral, dreamscape, Romantic-mystery-drama, is one of my favorite films. Referencing noir classics like <em>Sunset Boulevard<\/em>, Lynch\u2019s Mulholland drive starring Naomi Watts and Laura Harring, follows the unfolding of an amnesiacs\u2019 story after her accident on the self-titled Los Angeles road.<br \/>\n<b>Fun-fact<\/b>: Mulholland Drive was almost a TV series, but it was scrapped last minute. David Lynch then re-purposed the idea as a feature-film.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Remember that trippy intro and those weird shots Lynch used<\/em>?)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Nightcrawler (2014)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/M\/MV5BNDZlYTRlNzktM2I3Zi00ZmNiLTk5NTgtNWRmODQ4ZTljNDBjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjUwNzk3NDc@._V1_SX1777_CR0,0,1777,999_AL_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1084\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dan Gilroy\u2019s <em>Nightcrawler<\/em>, follows Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a con man who becomes an L.A crime reporter, and starts to blur the lines between reporter, and participant. Although not directly associated with the movie-making industry, <em>Nightcrawler<\/em> explores the themes of Fame and Success.<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s as if Patrick Bateman was transported to 2012 and subsequently lost everything in the market crash and had to find a part-time job!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Blade Runner (1982)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/M\/MV5BMTc1NDA0MDU5OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTQ3NDU4Mw@@._V1_SX1777_CR0,0,1777,822_AL_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1084\" height=\"715\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OK, I know what you\u2019re saying \u201cBlade runner deals with Harrison Ford shooting Robot-Human-replicants\u201d, <em>but bare with me\u2026 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Ridley Scott\u2019s <em>Blade Runner<\/em>, the images that people present aren\u2019t always what they seem. Harrison Ford traverses a futuristic, post-modern 2019 L.A landscape, filled with mass advertising and consumption.\u00a0 The movie deals with themes of identity; specifically, as it relates to self, and humanity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I know this isn\u2019t the end-all-be-all list of every film that\u2019s ever been shot in L.A, but these are my personal favorites that truly play with the stereotypical image of \u201cHollywood\u201d and \u201cThe Industry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Did I forget any title you believe should be on this list?<\/p>\n<p>Comments?
