A Pseudo-Psychological Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the most esteemed (albeit easily misinterpreted) thinkers of all time, once referred to Fyodor Dostoyevsky as \u201cthe only psychologist from whom I\u2019ve anything to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was, to be sure, long before Freud, whose first work, <em>On Aphasia<\/em>, was published two years after Nietzsche lost complete control of his mental facilities in Turin, Italy, in the year 1889. To say that he also lost all the knowledge he had learned about psychology from Dostoyevsky as well would be to state the obvious.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dost-Niet.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1920829\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1920829 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dost-Niet-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Dost-Niet\" width=\"544\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dost-Niet-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dost-Niet-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dost-Niet-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Dost-Niet.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Nietzsche\u2019s emotional reaction towards a mistreated horse, as passionate of an expression as it was, ultimately fails to invalidate the wise council of Doctor Dostoyevsky. Freud might have written a book titled <em>The Interpretation of Dreams, <\/em>but Dostoyevsky himself dove headlong into a dream in <em>Dreams of a Ridiculous Man. <\/em>That is perhaps the best way to summarize the differences between the two eminent men of letters.<\/p>\n<p>One thing the two very different men had in common, however, was that they were not afraid to give society prescriptions, one on his couch and the other with his pen. The number of weak hearts throughout the history of literature has become uncountable: Goethe\u2019s Young Werther, Romeo &amp; Juliet and Don Quixote, in pursuit of the fair and beautiful Dulcinea del Toboso, are a few who come to mind. Perhaps one of your past lovers has been weak-hearted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Lit-combined.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1921205\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1921205 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Lit-combined-300x106.jpg\" alt=\"Lit-combined\" width=\"614\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Lit-combined-300x106.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Lit-combined-768x272.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Lit-combined-1024x363.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But just as HG Wells revolutionized the storytelling of invisibility by crediting the Invisible Mans invisibility to science \u2013 optics in particular \u2013 instead of the usual magic or witchcraft, Dostoyevsky doesn\u2019t permit love to save Vasya Shumkov, Dostoyevsky\u2019s imagined patient, from his irredeemable flaw as it usually would. But this love, such a source of happiness for him, has also consumed him and his entire life at the expense of everything else.
