His novel <em>The Double<\/em> has inspired many a film and novel ever since \u2013 and the theme of doppelganger has even held sway over the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shadesofday.com\/filmakers_vitaly.htm\">Vitaly Sumin<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dostoevsky-bts.com\" target=\"_blank\">behind-the-scenes production<\/a> about the making of <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmpfilms.com\/Notes_from_the_new_world.html\">Notes from the New World<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, an adaptation of the Russian author\u2019s <em>Notes from the Underground<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>Two recently produced film versions of <em>The Double<\/em> tell Dostoevsky\u2019s doppelganger story in effective ways. <strong><em>Enemy<\/em><\/strong>, director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0898288\/?ref_=tt_ov_dr\" target=\"_blank\">Denis Villeneuve<\/a>\u2019s 2013 independent film thriller about a professor\u2019s discovery of his own doppelganger (both professor and double played by Jake Gyllenhaal), has a surprise ending for the ages. It\u2019s an existential foray into humanity, into the male-female relationship, as well as \u2013 of all things \u2013 a treatise on dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a novel of the same name by the magical realist Portuguese author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0764832\/?ref_=tt_ov_wr\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Saramago<\/a>, the film <strong><em>Enemy<\/em><\/strong> is itself a sort of doppelganger in that it adapted a straightforward story from a novel onto the big screen, and then mischievously added its own ending, its own themes, and its own terrifying imagery of gigantic spiders into the mix. This double of the novel <strong><em>Enemy<\/em><\/strong> takes on evil-twin characteristics by changing the original themes into something otherworldly\u2014a doppelganger in the truest sense.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FJuaAWrgoUY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also in 2013 &#8211; as if another attempt at the doppelganger theme &#8211; writer\/director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1547964\/?ref_=tt_ov_dr\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Ayoade<\/a>\u00a0released his independent film <strong><em>The Double<\/em><\/strong>. This\u00a0film is a direct adaptation of Dostoevsky\u2019s novel of the same name, and takes much fewer liberties with the source material than Villeneuve\u2019s <em><strong>Enemy<\/strong><\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0251986\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0\" target=\"_blank\">Jesse Eisenberg<\/a> plays the main character, a workaday civil servant whose life resembles a hamster\u2019s on a treadmill and who soon discovers that there is an entirely different version of himself that not only could exist but, somehow, miraculously has been brought into existence. It leads him down a rabbit hole worthy of the best nonsensical tales of Lewis Carroll.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XG8qATRtNuU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In another independent film production twist, the recent disappearance of <a href=\"http:\/\/dostoevsky-bts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">VM Productions&#8217; screenwriter Robert Hurley<\/a> was the biproduct of a self-fulfilling doppelganger prophecy.
